What is it?

Solar photovoltaic (PV) uses energy from the sun to create electricity, it requires only daylight - not direct sunlight - to generate electricity. PV systems generate no greenhouse gases, a typical domestic system can save approximately one tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year - adding up to almost 25 tonnes over a system's lifetime.

How much electricity will it produce?

A typical 3.5kWp system can generate around 3000kW hours of electricity a year, about three quarters of a typical households electricity needs.

Feed In Tariff (FIT)?

All properties need an Energy Preformance Certificate with a band 'D' or above to be eligible for the higher FIT rate. The current higher rate of FIT is 15.44p/kWh for each kW of electricity you generate whether you use or export. The lower rate of FIT is 7.1p/kWh for each kW of electricity you generate whether you use or export. There is deemed rate of export of 4.5p/kWh, with deemed assumed to be 50% of electricity exported. The tariff period is for 20 years, with tariffs being paid every 3 months. With every quote we provided we will give estimate of electricity generated, income FIT and savings.

Only installations fitted by Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) approved installers using MCS approved equipment will be eligible to claim the FIT. Ecotec Energy are fully MCS accredited and only install MCS accredited products.

Energy prices?

Energy prices continue to rise upwards every above inflation, even with reduced FIT rates compared to 2011. The cost of PV systems have come down and are still good valve.

Is it suitable for my home?

The ideal roof is south facing with no shading from trees or other buildings.

It will still work on east and west facing roofs, but the output will be less than south facing.

If you have no shading then a single string inverter is best option.

If you have shading then micro-inverters are the best option, as each PV panel is controlled separately and

if one one panel is in the shade the other panels are uneffected.


A well designed system should operate well in excess of the average manufacturers 25 year warranty (depending on manufacturer). The PV module which has no moving parts has a lifetime expectancy of at least 25 years, but can last many years more. Single string inverters have warranty of 5 years, micro inverters have 20 year warranty.
